Kenya’s Tourism Sector has gotten a huge boost after some of the country’s top travel destinations won big at the 25th edition of the World Travel Awards (WTA).
The event; that was hosted in Durban, South Africa, saw Maasai Mara Reserve being named the Leading National Park on the continent. Diani Beach Resort and Spa was subsequently named the Leading Beach Destination in the region.
The two Kenyan entities overcame stiff competition from other such establishments but this was Maasai Mara’s sixth time to win the award. Diani Beach Resort, on the other hand, has held top spot for five years running in the beach destinations category.
Other Kenyan hospitality establishments that won big during the award include: Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club, Aberdare Country Club, and Villa Rosa Kempinski, Nairobi. Bonfire Adventures was christened Africa’s Leading Travel Agency for the third year in a row. Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Nanyuki was also named Africa’s leading Conservation establishment during the awards.
Kenya Airways contrarily lost to Ethiopian Airlines in the overall leading airline category but it was recognized as the airline with the best business and economy class in the region. Africa’s Leading Airport’ went to Cape Town International Airport.
Meanwhile in the Indian Ocean category, Air Mauritius claimed a lion’s share of the honors, winning ‘Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline’, ‘Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline – Business Class’, ‘Indian Ocean’s Leading Airline Brand’, and ‘Indian Ocean’s Airport Lounge’
Speaking on the awards ceremony, Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Betty Radier insisted that the awards augmented the fact that Kenya’s tourism sector was growing for the better especially since the different winners had all gained global recognition.
The World Travel Awards was established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all sectors of the tourism industry. Today, the WTA brand is recognised globally as the ultimate hallmark of quality, with winners setting the benchmark to which others aspire.
The ceremony marked the sixth leg of the WTA Grand Tour 2018 – a series of regional events to acknowledge the world’s outstanding travel brands.
