First Lady Margaret Kenyatta on Wednesday commissioned a Ksh. 135 million specialist hospital in Makueni County which is set to handle cases related to reproductive health within the County and its environs.
The specialist hospice dubbed Makueni Mother and Child Hospital and built within Makueni County Referral Hospital grounds, boasts of a wide range of facilities such as a nursery, two theatres, nine incubators, six delivery beds, ultrasound and imaging facilities, aqua birth facilities, various wards for mothers and babies, laboratory and a pharmacy.
Speaking during the commissioning, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta expressed her joy for the successful establishment of the facility that makes a comprehensive range of health services available in the region.
“As I toured the facility, I was impressed by the level of care given by the hospital staff and the broad range of specialised reproductive health services offered from maternity, to pediatric and gynecological care,” First Lady Margaret Kenyatta said.
Similarly First Lady Kenyatta said the Makueni mother and child hospital will greatly contribute to reversing maternal and child mortality in the region through the provision of timely emergency and specialised care.
She also paid homage to Makueni Governor Prof Kivutha Kibwana and his administration for prioritizing the health of women and children in the County.
“I applaud the Governor and the County Government for reaching out to mothers and children and making Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) a priority. The efforts placed by the leadership in improving health care in this county will bring positive change to the lives of many families and communities living in this region,” said the First Lady.
Having launched such a facility in Nakuru County a few weeks ago, First Lady Margaret Kenyatta said the health facilities- Makueni Mother and Child Hospital and Makueni County Referral Hospital- were a huge statement that county governments are ready to complement the National Government in the expansion of health facilities to actualize Kenya’s collective dream towards UHC. She also called on women in the area to take advantage of the new facility.
On his part, Makueni County Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana said the people of Makueni are supportive of both the UHC and the government’s Big 4 development agenda. He also laude the First Lady for her achievements under her Beyond Zero Initiative.
