Glovo strikes delivery deals with local retailers


Spanish delivery firm Glovo has inked deals with four local food product companies to deliver their merchandise to customers across the country just seven months after entering the Kenyan market.

The new deals will see Glovo, which uses independent couriers to deliver food, groceries and gifts ordered online via the Glovo app at a maximum deliver fee of Ksh. 100; deliver products to customers making purchases from Java House, Naivas Supermarket, Zucchini Greengrocers and Onn The Way Supermarket in a bid to grow its customer base.

“In the long run, these partnerships will help us achieve our broader strategy of being a single platform for all our customer’s needs and deliveries,” said William Benthall, Glovo’s General Manager for Kenya.

Apart from the aforementioned retailers, Glovo has also partnered with Simbisa Brands, the operators of Pizza Inn, Chicken Inn, Creamy Inn and Galitos to deliver their products to local consumers.

The firm recently raised Ksh. 17 billion to facilitate the expansion of its continental footprint and product portfolio. After the fundraising ceremony, Glovo said that the raised amount would be used to expand the delivery firm’s presence in the Sub-Saharan countries of Ghana, Nigeria and Tanzania while similarly expanding its delivery portfolio to include not only food and groceries but also drinks, gifts, laundry, pharmacy products and courier services

“We will use this opportunity to grow our team of tech experts to create a smarter and more efficient experience for customers,” said Glovo Head of Marketing for sub-Saharan Africa Priscilla Muhiu then.

The firm has also deviated from its traditional distribution network that relies on independent couriers to make deliveries in the Central Business District (CBD) by introducing roller skaters to drop off orders to customers within the capital in an effort to increase its market reach.
