Safaricom’s M-PESA Global has been nominated for the Global Mobile Awards 2019 (GLOMO Awards) at this years’ edition of the GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC) which is slated to take place from February 25 to February 28 in Barcelona, Spain.

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is an annual award ceremony, now in its 32nd edition, that serves as the world’s largest exhibition for the mobile industry. It seeks to showcase technologies, products and services that are shaping the future of mobile.

M-PESA Global was shortlisted under the Best Mobile Innovation for Commerce after a successful launch in Nairobi in November, 2018. The groundbreaking service allows anyone from essentially any location in the world to send money through a variety of channels including directly into bank accounts to more than 500,000 Western Union agent locations.

During the launch of the service late last year, Safaricom’s Chief Financial Services Officer, Sitoyo Lopokoiyit insisted the new service would open up M-PESA to the rest of the world. He shared the same sentiments during the announcement of the award nominees.

“We launched M-PESA Global as part of our strategy to open up M-PESA to the world. The fact that it has been recognised at a global event that is widely seen as the ‘oscars’ of the mobile industry is a reflection of how the service has revolutionised the sector”, said Mr. Lopokoiyit.

According to John Hoffman, the CEO of GSMA Limited, being nominated for the awards is an achievement all on its own.

“The GLOMOs provide a world stage on which to celebrate the most inspirational and innovative developments across the mobile industry. The awards attract a significant level of high-quality entries, so for a company to be among the list of nominees is a great achievement,” said John Hoffman, CEO, GSMA Ltd in a statement announcing this year’s nominations.

Other firms nominated under the same category as M-PESA Global include: Huawei & Schwarz Gruppe for CloudCampus Solution, Synchronoss for The Synchronoss Digital Experience Platform, Ubamarket & DMI for Ubamarket and Whisbi for Whisbi: Conversational Sales & Marketing Platform for Enterprises.

In last years’ GLOMO awards, Shupavu 291 which was developed by Eneza Education in collaboration with Safaricom, won in the Best Mobile Invention for Education category.
